Sunshine Coast Seniors Planning Table Overview
During the process of the Resource Centre’s Progress Plan, adult care was identified as one of the major issues on the Sunshine Coast. As a result, in April 2014 the Community Resource Centre held a public meeting to learn more about the specific needs of older adults.
A number of issues were identified along with recommendations to address those issues. One of those recommendations was to develop a “Seniors Planning Table” in order to address, in a more coordinated, effective way, the “grey tsunami” that hit the Sunshine Coast a number of years ago.
“I want to remain healthy and able to live comfortably and safely in my current home with whatever outside assistance I might require, at an affordable cost. If physical/mobility issues should make staying in my current home an impossibility, I would like to know that there would be adequate seniors’ housing/care facilities available at an affordable cost”, Female Resident, Halfmoon Bay
We may be late in planning for this – but we are doing it now.
The Sunshine Coast Community Foundation (SCCF), through its Vital Signs reports, understood the need and provided our organization with funds to move forward with creating a Seniors Planning Table (SPT).
Through those funds, we had the great fortune to have Alison Leaney as the first coordinator for the newly formed Seniors Planning Table. Alison is an extremely knowledgeable and well connected individual in the area of needs of older adults – recognized both provincially and nationally.
The Seniors Planning Table is made up of 50+ local organizations and service providers that support seniors as well as individual senior representatives. The SPT operates under the leadership of the Resource Centre and volunteers.
It has been supported through grants from the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation, the Sunshine Coast Credit Union, and an Age Friendly Grant from the District of Sechelt.
