I immigrated to Canada a couple of years ago, and I’m relatively new to the coast. I’m finding it hard to make connections, access services and improve my English, especially during this pandemic. Is there anyone who can help?

Our Welcoming Communities program (run in partnership with CapU) may be just the thing for you. It’s here to help settle and orient new Canadians here on the Sunshine Coast. We run free settlement information sessions, English language classes, and social events.

Recent Zoom events such as a Thai cooking class and Zumba class have been in collaboration with Welcoming Communities branches in Whistler and Pemberton. While we look forward to getting back to in-person meetups, for now, you could say the potential to expand your virtual social network includes the entire Howe Sound region!

Contact: Virginia, settlement & outreach worker – welcome@resourcecentre.com, or by calling the Resource Centre directly at 604-885-4088 and we will connect you to Welcoming Communities. Facebook: @SunshineCoastWelcomingCommunities.

Is it true that I can get my taxes done for free on the coast?

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a free tax service operating under the Resource Centre umbrella. It’s offered to people described as having a “modest income and a simple tax situation.” The income threshold varies depending on your family size. We are happy to go over eligibility criteria with you, and then if you qualify, we will refer you to a CVITP volunteer, who will do your taxes for free! Call our office at 604-885-4088 or email help@resourcecentre.ca to find out more.
