How Can I Access Free Legal Support?
Hayley Toth | Sunshine Coast Resource Centre

Legal issues can be overwhelming and stressful. Many people don’t know where to start, worry about high legal costs, or feel unsure about the process. Missing deadlines or navigating the legal system alone can have serious consequences. Fortunately, there is support available for those who need guidance.

Legal Aid BC (LABC) provides eligible residents with access to lawyers, duty counsel, and other services at no cost or reduced cost. They can assist with a variety of matters such as Family, Child Protection, Criminal and Immigration. For family law, this includes issues such as parenting arrangements and guardianship, support payments, and protection orders. For criminal law matters, Legal Aid BC can represent people charged with offenses and support during bail hearings or court appearances. In some cases, Legal Aid BC can also provide support to refugee claimants.

Legal Aid also offers practical tools and guidance. This includes the Family Law Line which offers 6 hours of advice, guidance on completing court forms, instructions on court processes and support for those representing themselves when a lawyer is not available. Representation is income and eligibility-based, meaning some but not all costs may be covered. Legal Aid BC focuses on urgent or essential matters, often prioritizing family law, criminal cases, and matters affecting safety.

At the Sunshine Coast Resource Centre, a community partner of LABC, residents can get one-on-one assistance accessing these services through the local Legal Aid Intake Coordinator. Keanna, our coordinator, meets with community members, helping them apply for Legal Aid BC, connecting with other free or low-cost legal services, or supporting clients to attend virtual legal appointments. Outreach is also available at the Sechelt Provincial Courthouse twice monthly, coinciding with Family and Criminal Duty Counsel. Please be sure to check resourcecentre.ca to confirm that outreach is running as scheduled. Upcoming outreach sessions include Thursday April 2, from 1-3pm, for Family Duty Counsel and Wednesday, April 8, also from 1-3pm, for Criminal Duty Counsel.

Using these resources can make legal processes more accessible, reduce stress, and help you feel informed and supported. The Sunshine Coast Resource Centre serves as a hub for information, programs, and navigation, helping residents connect with Legal Aid BC and other community resources. If you’re unsure where to start or feel overwhelmed, just ask—we’re here to help you get the support you need. If you need help accessing any of the above resources or would prefer a one-on-one appointment with our Intake Coordinator, contact the Resource Centre at legalinfo@resourcecentre.ca or call 604.741.6190.
