Volunteerism is the key to building strong, healthy, and connected communities, and the Sunshine Coast has an incredible number of its citizens stepping up to provide support. Our community is home to more than 120 local nonprofits that rely on volunteers to provide essential services, run events, and support vulnerable populations. However, with fewer volunteers, vital services on the Coast and many community events are at risk.
Many local organizations are facing growing challenges in recruiting and retaining volunteers. According to Volunteer Canada, 65 per cent of Canadian nonprofit organizations are experiencing a troubling volunteer shortage, with 35 per cent of those forced to reduce services as a result. Busy schedules, family commitments, and lack of awareness often prevent people from volunteering. Finding the right fit for personal skills and interest can also be a challenge.
Starting April 27, Volunteer Appreciation Week is a time to celebrate all those who are already making our Coast a better place for everyone. If you’ve yet to get involved, now is the perfect time to join in and help sustain the amazing spirit that makes the Sunshine Coast home.
The Sunshine Coast offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities for all ages and skill levels. Whether it’s helping a senior with light yard work through Better at Home, assembling food boxes with One Straw Society, removing invasive plants with Streamkeepers, or assisting guests at events like the Writers’ Festival, there’s something for everyone. Volunteers bring energy and dedication that help shape initiatives, ensuring they remain impactful for those who need them most. Organizations from Harmony Hall in Gibsons to the Pender Harbour Health Centre rely on volunteers to enhance local programs and expand their reach within the community. Additionally, many nonprofits seek volunteers for communications roles to help manage social media, or as board directors who can offer local expertise and insights. For example, Sunshine Coast Community Services is currently recruiting board members for the Thrift Store and the Family Resource Programs both in Gibsons.
If you’re not sure where to start, the 4th Annual Volunteer Fair, hosted by the Rotary of the Sunshine Coast, is a great way to explore a variety of opportunities and connect with local organizations. Michael McKenzie, Volunteer Fair coordinator and club president says “[So] far, over 40 organizations have registered and … we have a lot of new organizations at the fair this year and they are very diverse. It’s a perfect opportunity for someone to see what the Coast offers all under one roof.” The event will be held on Sunday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sechelt Seniors Activity Centre. The fair is free, with no registration required.
