Supporting family and friend caregivers is vital, as they are often the primary source of emotional, physical, and financial support for individuals who are elderly, chronically ill, or have disabilities. The Sunshine Coast Caregiver Support Program is dedicated to acknowledging, appreciating, and supporting residents who provide care to family members, friends, or clients. Recognizing the multifaceted challenges caregivers face, the program offers a range of services to assist them in their vital roles.

At the heart of the program is providing compassionate listening and tailored resources. Caregivers can connect with trained coordinators by calling or texting 604-885-4088. These coordinators offer one-on-one support over the phone, guiding caregivers to disease-specific organizations and groups, helping them navigate the complexities of the healthcare system, and connecting them with community resources designed to support their essential roles.

Support Groups

A cornerstone of the program is the “Caregivers on the Coast Support Group,” which provides a welcoming space for caregivers to share stories, tips, and local resources. Led by experienced caregiver BJ Doyle, the group offers empathy and guidance for every caregiving journey, whether one is supporting someone young, old, or in between.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, alternating between Sechelt, Gibsons, and online via Zoom. Upcoming sessions include February 13 at 2 pm at Rockwood Lodge Dining Room in Sechelt and March 13 online via Zoom.

Other support groups for carers on the Coast include Memory Cafe, a weekly activity group for persons with dementia and their caregivers, Foundry’s Caregivers for Youth, Hollyburn’s Foster Parent Support Group, and SD46’s parenting support programs. Many other groups and resources for caregivers on the Coast can be found on the Sunshine Coast Service Directory at www.resourcecentre.ca

Being a Caregiver

By appreciating and supporting caregivers, we can remind them they are valued and encourage them to prioritize their own well-being, which is crucial for sustaining their ability to provide care. This includes  accessing the necessary resources to maintain their well-being and continue providing care effectively.
