From the fall of 2019 through to Spring 2020, the Sunshine Coast Resource Centre conducted a research project to explore the needs and experiences of senior members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer community (LGBTQ2+) on the Sunshine Coast. This project was funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizon for Seniors program.
We undertook several activities in Fall 2019 to reach seniors in the LGBTQ+ community to learn of their experiences and needs regarding services such as health care, public safety, access to amenities and housing. Outreach activities included discussion groups and an online survey as well as individual interviews where needed.
Recommendations gleaned from the data collected were shared with various organizations providing services to seniors on the Sunshine Coast to see if gaps can be addressed or training provided. Finally, all findings are summarized in this report.
We have been identifying needs and concerns of seniors on the Coast for several years but have never targeted the LGBTQ2+ seniors or their allies to determine their specific needs. This is a first effort and we learned a lot.
